SSL FTP ::
Secure Sockets Layer File Transfer Protocol
Based on an IETF draft from June 1997, SSL FTP was described as an extension to the FTP Protocol that allowed for secured, authenticated FTP communications to take place via data channels using the SSL Protocol.
Upgraded to RFC 4217, SSL FTP provided SSL support for FTP in a manner similar to that provided to HTTP by RFC 2817. The security extensions offered a set of commands and responses allowing for authentication, integrity, and confidentiality via FTP.
What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is based on the IETF RFC 959. FTP software allows you to transfer files between your hard drive and a remote server. For instance, you could put your personal home page up on the Web by transferring files from your hard drive to a Web server, or you can quickly download programs from your favorite shareware site.

FTP users find transferring files via email grossly inefficient or impractical when dealing with large documents. For uploading such files, FTP is the only open standard answer (e.g., for efficiently posting new HTML pages to a webserver).

What is SSL?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer Protocol) is a security technology that is commonly used to secure server to browser transactions. This generally includes the securing of any information passed by a browser (such as a customer's credit card number or password) to a web server (such as an online store).
The IETF renamed SSL to TLS (Transport Layer Security) but the principles are the same - SSL (or TLS) protects data submitted over the Internet from being intercepted and viewed by unintended recipients.
